People ask us all the time:

"I want an an accurate AR-15 with the power to drop hogs at 300 yards but that isn't as heavy as an AR-10; I want it to be suppressed and wear a thermal scope, but I don't want it to cost a fortune because I can't pay over 5K total. Is this possible?"

"Oh yea," say the guys at Red Cloud.

Frank and Jeff believe the 6.8 SPC II is the best AR cartridge for hogs because 1. it bridges the gap between the .223 and the .308; it has much more energy than the 223/556 and overrated .300 Blackout, so it's a bonafide hog round, yet recoil remains mild. 2. Ammo is very affordable in FMJs for practice and soft points for good performance on game out to 400 yards or slightly more. 3. It performs well when suppresssed and is perfect for youngsters even for deer ... and is excellent for home defense for all of the same reasons. And 4. It uses standard AR-15 mags and requires relatively little modification to existing ARs (barrel & bolt) to run. However, not a ton of companies offer guns in 6.8 SPC II, and it's a shame.

But Rock River does, and its Coyote Carbine remains perhaps the best value in terms of features/reliablity/accuracy vs. cost on the market. It's simply an amazing rifle compared to any rifle, but especially for the money. (Upgrades such as fully ambidetrous controls can be added.) If we thought you needed a more expensive gun, we'd tell you, and we've got them to sell you. But we really don't think you need anything more that this Rock River that's available in seveal colors.

We then tested all thermal scopes, and now believe we do not have to pay $5-$10K (much less $15K for a great thermal scope with more features than you'll ever use. Although the expensive models have superior resolution, we feel the tiny gain in resoution is not worth the ridiculous money. The Thor 5 LRF 320 3-12x scope has every feature hunters and shooters need---offering amazing performance at longer distances than most people can accurately shoot---yet is affordable at around $2,000. It has a built in rangefinder, bluetooth capability, video recording, etc, but mainly, it gives you complete dominance over the night. Just 10 years ago, such technology would have cost $100,000. But not any more. It's also relatively light and compact.

Next, we add a suppressor---there are many good ones, but we're big on the YHM resonator at the moment because it does a wonderful job mitigating noise and reducing recoil, and it comes with a QD kit for a great price. But we also love some of the slighly more expensive titanium suppressors for Silencerco, Silencer Central, Dead Air and others. 

If you wish to pay a little more and get fancy, we'll install a 45-degree offset mount for the red dot of your choosing---if you need the capability of shooting quickly in daytime or short-range, artificial light situations. 

At 8.2 lbs. it's silly-lightweight considering it wears a thermal scope and a suppressor, and this is a huge deal when lugging a rifle around at night and getting in and out of vehicles while chasing hogs. 

Finally, the whole thing is accuracy/function tested as set up, zeroed (if you wish) and placed in a custom-fitted Pelican case ($300 value) which you'll want to protect your investment. 

If you did you reserach and bought all of these things individually it would likely cost around $5,300. But right now before Christmas it can be yours, new in the custom case (NICC) for $4,800, saving you $500 and a bunch of time thinking it all over. If you wish to nix the suppressor to avoid the form 4 hassle, make it an even $4,000.
